How to paint a metal roof

A Word from the Experts: The metal roof paint that is applied during manufacturing will eventually fade completely away and rust will set in. When this occurs, the application of Calbar metal roof paint is required. Coatings used for maintenance and aftermarket applications must posses similar attributes to paints and coatings applied during the metal-manufacturing process. Protection from the elements: UV radiation, rain, snow, ice, pollution and other airborne contaminants is imperitive. The purpose of the coating is to prevent further metal-surface degradation such as rust or corrosion.
Prior to the application of maintenance coatings, all required repairs should be completed. Initial repairs be to make sure that all fasteners, seams and laps, have been checked and resealed with Calbar Roof Seal if necessary. Fasteners are originally waterproof, thanks to the rubber gromits that are placed under the fastener when the roof is applied. These grommits will deteriorate over time allowing rain to penetrate the roof. Seams and laps can be made watertight with a combination of Calbar Roof Seal and polyester fabric.  Once the repairs are completed, preparation of the metal surface is required. The metal surface should be thoroughly power washed and scrubbed with a solution of Tri-Sodium Phasphate (TSP). Rust and corrosion should be treated with 10-520 rust inhibitive roof primer after all loose rust is scraped from the surface. When the preparation is completed, two coats of Showerproof "WB" should be applied in accordance with directions at a mil thickness of 8 wet mil per coat.
Calbar products are available in a variety of colors, Lighter colors (white, gray) are more reflective, but reds and greens are still the color of choice.

People do paint copper because they want a change, but frankly i think that it is foolish because it creates a maintenance cycle that never goes away. Patina Green is a natural chemical reaction that comes from copper over time but Calbar Metal Roof Paint also supplies a paint alternative that mimmiks the copper patina. the material will last about 10 years if applied correctly.

Changing the color of a metal roof is as easy as painting it, but we would need a little more information about the existing metal. How old is it? What type of profile does it have, for example is it standing seam, v crimp, ect? does it have existing paint on it or is it a factory finish? If it is a factory finish, is it Kynar, Polyester, ect? You may not know the answer to all of these questions but answer what you can and i will help you with the job.

Thank you for your comments. It is true that the largest metal roofs are commercial, and i agree that the largest commercial opportunity for coating older roofs lies in the commercial field, But here in the northeast there is a huge number of homes that have metal roofs. In addition, the southeast and southwest have many homes that use metal especially in the hurricane belts. I live in an area where there are homes with standing seam roofs that date back to the civil war. I love to see these old homes and cringe when I hear about someone shingling over them.

Can Calbar roof paint be tinted and if so what is recomended for the tint?-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We do not recommend tinting the Calbar Roof Paint simply because common store bought tints are only about 15-20% color and the remaining 80% are glycols and other products that will stretch the mix. Adding a lot of foreign raw materials to our formula will weaken the product's ability to proform as described. I realize that many jobs do not need more that a gallon or two, but there is always the option of ordering a custom color from Calbar, The minimum quanity is 25 gallons. Finally, as a last option, you can change the shade of a standard color by mixing two or more of Calbar's standard colors together.
